At AKJ Dentistry, our team has been committed to providing high-quality dental care to Lubbock-area residents since 1993. We encourage patients to prevent decay, cavities and other oral health problems with good dental hygiene, including regular check-ups and cleanings. During professional teeth cleaning, we remove plaque and tartar build-up at the base of each tooth to keep these substances from wearing away enamel, causing sensitivity and damage.
What Should I Expect During a Dental Cleaning?
When food residue remains on the teeth after a meal, it combines with bacteria in the mouth to create a sticky substance called plaque. Over time, plaque becomes a hard, yellow or white, a substance called tartar that contributes to tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss.
Although brushing and flossing remove many of the food particles that can cause plaque and tartar to accumulate, some areas of the mouth can be difficult to reach. Deep teeth cleaning uses dental instruments that can completely remove tartar and plaque from tooth surfaces both above and below the gum line, particularly in the molars and areas with tight cracks and crevices. Next, the teeth are scrubbed with special toothpaste and electric brush to polish their surfaces. The hygienist uses floss to remove debris from between the teeth as well.
How long does a dental cleaning take? Most appointments take about an hour but may last longer when the person has not had a cleaning in some time and/or has significant plaque and tartar build-up around the gum line. After the dental hygienist performs your cleaning, the dentist will examine your teeth and gums, and recommend treatment or follow-up for any potential issues.
How Often Should I Visit the Dentist?
People who are in generally good dental health should have a dental cleaning every six months. Some individuals can benefit from more frequent cleaning, especially in the presence of symptoms like bad breath, gums that bleed while brushing and flossing, visible discoloration, and tooth pain or sensitivity. We provide each patient with personalized attention and recommend a treatment plan that best addresses your oral health issues.
